Home is Where the Heart is

A home can be described as many things: welcoming, warm, cozy and accepting. But, how about a workplace? Is it possible to describe your office with the same words?

As we begin settling into our new office, there’s been a lot of talk about having a workplace resemble a home. Since moving in, we’ve received “housewarming gifts” from nearby businesses welcoming us to the neighborhood, and our office management has continued to work at making our new space as comfortable and “homey” as possible.

Personally, I’ve always perceived a home to be a place someone longed to return to if they ever parted from it. A place where if your house was carried to the Land of Oz you would travel with a scarecrow, tin-man and lion to come all the way back. Although I’ve greatly enjoyed working here, I’m not sure I’d go through the measures Dorothy took in “The Wizard of Oz.”

However, I’ve come to find that a home is not a home without the people within it. Burt Bacharach once sang about this in “A House is not a Home,” by saying;

“A room is still a room, even when there’s nothing but gloom

But a room is not a house and a house is not a home,

When the two of us are far apart”.

Alright, alright, I’ll stop now. But, even though his point was better suited for lovers, the message still stands; the people within a house is what makes it a home. I believe the same can apply to a workplace.

Although Eisbrenner Public Relations now resides within a more collaborative environment and vibrant community, it’s the team that continues to make it what it is. Maybe it would be more suitable to quote Sister Sledge’s “We are Family,” but either way, a home is only a reflection of the people and the culture within it.
