The Intern Checklist

I make checklists, whether I’m packing for a trip, or working on a project, lists keep me from wandering aimlessly in the store or forgetting my presentation. I can’t begin to count the number of times I’ve locked myself out of the house, gone to the gas station without my wallet or searched my desk for my cell phone and discovered I left it at home.

Because of this, I’ve even created a mental checklist for leaving the house (yes, I know it sounds silly). As I walk out the door, I pat my pockets for my wallet and phone and make sure I have my keys in hand. I’ve hardly ever left them behind since I began this “property check.”

Eisbrenner Public Relations is big into lists, too. At the beginning of my internship, I received a tailored list of suggested tasks, goals we identified at the beginning of my internship and the progress I’ve made on each. At first this list seemed daunting, but the team has done a wonderful job integrating me into client work. Not only have I been able to cross everything off the list, but I’ve done more than I’d ever expected. From compiling press clips and research, to drafting press releases and executive bios, the opportunities have helped me grow tremendously.

Through this process, what I’ve learned to love about checklists is the flexibility. My intern checklist and goals looks much different than when I started. I’ve added tasks, utilized dates to track deadlines and updated my goals to be sure they weren’t outdated.

Even though I’ve become a checklist fanatic, I’d never thought about creating a checklist for reaching my goals for an internship or job like Eisbrenner PR has done. I’ve decided to begin making a list of activities that will help me accomplish my career goals – I can’t wait to check them off the list!

If you don’t have checklists for your internship or job, I encourage you to do the same.

And if you have tips for creating a successful checklist, please share!
